Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Education The Pennsylvania State University USA

Michael G. Moore is known in academic circles for leadership in the scholarly study of distance education. He published the first statement of theory about distance education in 1972, and has achieved a number of “firsts” in this field. While teaching the first course in this subject at University of Wisconsin in the mid 70s, he was contributory to founding the national annual conference there.

He has served on the editorial boards of all the main distance education journals, on program committees for International Council for Distance Education and similar organizations, published over 100 articles, two books (with translations in four languages) and many monographs, and given speeches and presentations in about 30 different countries. In 2003 Moore was inducted into the United States Distance Learning Association Hall of Fame. Originally trained as an economist and grounded in an early adult education career of seven years in East Africa, Moore maintains a special interest in education for economic and social development, undertaking various research, evaluation and training projects for the World Bank, UNESCO, and IMF and several national governments.
