Transparency in Cooperative Online Education

Morten Flate Paulsen, Director of Development, NKI Distance Education

My fascination for online education started in 1986 when NKI Distance Education introduced EKKO, our first self-developed Learning Management System (LMS). Twenty one years later, we released SESAM 6 – NKI’s current LMS. It is developed in the era of web 2.0, so we build it to stimulate students and teachers to produce, share and refine cooperative learning resources. Now we add features to make it more transparent.

The most interesting and challenging of these concepts is transparency. So, lately I have spent much time contemplating the opportunities and consequences of transparency in online education. I’m confident that transparency supports quality and cooperation, but transparency issues are complex and hard to explain in a short blog entry. So, I have ventured to introduce my views in the experimental and extremely succinct cartoon format below.

I hope you enjoy my experimental cartoons. A few more are available online. I dare you to share your views on – and experiences with – transparency in online education as comments in the EDEN blog or as cartoon comments via http://toonlet.com/creator/MortenFP.

PS. If you want to learn more about transparency, you may read Christian Dalsgaard’s article “Social networking sites: Transparency in online education” at http://eunis.dk/papers/p41.pdf and my article “Cooperative Online Education” which will soon be available via www.seminar.net
