Paths To Internationalization and Cross-Cultural Exchange - The Experience of the Suny Center for Collaborative Online International Learning
Presented by:
Jon Rubin, Director, State University of New York COIL Center at Purchase College, USA
This workshop presents the recent COIL Center initiative to link faculty and students at SUNY with their peers abroad through team-taught online courses which foreground the cross-cultural perspectives of the collaborating participant students. The workshop will explore the role of faculty, international program staff, and distance education staff in developing synergistic intercultural courses. We also hope that those attending will contribute to the discussion with their own experiences in globally networked learning, leading to the development of new partnerships. Then, as an exemplar, the presenter will highlight his Cross-Cultural Video course which is built upon video exchanges between students at SUNY with students in other countries including Turkey, Mexico, Germany, Russia, Lithuania and Belarus. Production methods and course strategies will be presented and a number of short videos will be screened, demonstrating the potential for bringing creative media production into the intercultural classroom.
