In these uncertain times due to the Coronavirus COVID-19, many of us are struggling with the adjustment to working and teaching online. Where do you begin? How do you manage the process?
To address these questions and many others, EDEN is organising a series of practical webinars entitled “EDEN webinar series: Education in time of a pandemic #onlinetogether #covid19”. These webinars are featuring experts and experienced practitioners within the field of open, distance, and e-learning.
The weekly, one-hour sessions are held every Monday at 17:00 CEST, from March through June, 2020.



As each of us has often spoken and written about, the motives for using open educational resources and practices (OER and OEP) are many. Practically, the use of OER enables greater access to educational resources and the ability to adapt resources for different contexts, the use of OEP helps to foster learner activity and agency, and both OER and OEP help learners and teachers to develop vital digital capabilities. More profoundly, both can help to ameliorate inequalities that are present, and widening, within all education systems. As we deal with the current COVID-19 crisis, as individuals and as educators, the urgency of opening education is clear. OER and OEP, and other forms of open education, offer ways to support learners and teachers, to share vital knowledge and resources, to move beyond a limited set of options, and to preserve the values of higher education and perhaps even to save higher education itself. 

Rather than two separate 15-minute presentations, this session is structured as a conversation between Martin and Catherine, each sharing important OER and OEP research and resources and then  exploring some key questions, e.g. What are the advantages of using OER? How does it relate to OEP?
What are the opportunities in this time to rethink some of the ways we do teaching?
What are some of the issues to look out for?

After 30 minutes, the session will open for wider Q+A.

Martin Weller
Professor of Educational Technology, The Open University UK


Martin Weller is the director of The Open Education Research Hub and the director of the GO-GN network. Weller chaired the Open University’s first major online e-learning course in 1999, which attracted 15,000 students, and was the OU’s first LMS Director. His popular blog, features his writings on aspects of educational technology. He is the author of The Battle for Open (2014) and 25 Years of Ed Tech (2020) both available under an open licence.

Catherine Cronin
Strategic Education Developer, National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning in Higher Education (Ireland)


Catherine Cronin is Strategic Education Developer at Ireland’s National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education where her collaborative work across the sector supports digital and open education including the development of digital capabilities, use of open educational resources (OER) and open educational practices (OEP), and development of enabling policies for digital and open teaching and learning. Catherine’s 2018 PhD explored the benefits, risks and tensions of using open educational practices in higher education. You can find Catherine on Twitter @catherinecronin and at
