EDEN 2018 Annual Conference: #EDEN2018

Navigating between dimensions in the digital learning landscape



There has been an impressive response to the Call, showing high level compliance with the theme and concept. The relevance and diversity of submissions is reassuring for a conference rich in content and networking opportunities.

Detailed Conference Programme Available

The Conference programme includes plenaries, parallel sessions with paper presentations, workshops, trainings, moderated poster and demo sessions and the synergy strand, ensuring digital interactivity and cooperation on the social web.

The event starts on Sunday afternoon on 17 June, with registration, followed by the Welcome Reception and ends with a Farewell Coffee on 20 June.

imageThe EDEN Secretariat is taking care of the registration for the Annual Conference. The registration fee includes access to all conference facilities, the electronic Conference Proceedings, the Welcome Cocktail, lunches and refreshments during the conference days. The fee does not include accommodation and the conference dinner.

Pre-Conference Workshop “European Engineering Team” (EET)
18 June, Sunday 12-16 hrs, Albergo de Poveri Genova

The future working environment of young engineers within the dynamic European society and economy will be more and more coined by mobility as well as of transnational and intercultural competencies. The workshop will introduce a generic approach for the development and implementation of transnational project-oriented courses, illustrated on the example of the master course “European Engineering Team” (EET) at universities from Italy, Norway, Poland and Germany. Participants can plan their own courses in small groups with the support of the EET-partners, discussed in cooperation with potential partners.

The Best Research Paper Award Turns 10

In Genova in 2018 we shall welcome the tenth Anniversary of the EDEN Best Research paper Award initiative! EDEN has bestowed the Best Research Paper Award at its Annual Conferences and the bi-annual Research Workshops since 2008.

The selection process takes place in collaboration with the Ulrich Bernath Foundation for Research in Open and Distance Learning, with the support of a distinguished Jury.

Welcome Reception and EDEN Fellow Awards, 17 June:

The Welcome Reception will take place at Palazzo Doria Tursi which is a famous Genova museum at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Via Garibaldi.

A tradition of the EDEN Conferences is that in the end of the first day the lovers of literature and good wines share their latest interesting reading experience by short presentations. Everyone is welcome to present, to listen and discuss over a glass of wine!

Towards Personalized Guidance and Support for Learning

Building on its success of the research workshops, EDEN is pleased to announce its Tenth Research Workshop organised in collaboration with the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in Barcelona, Spain.


EDEN’s 2018 Workshop “Personalized Guidance and Support for Learning” focuses on the crucial and changing roles of teachers in supporting student learning in the digital world. This includes the creation of enabling conditions that encourage learning personalization, learner agency and self-direction.

EDENRW10 will be held in Barcelona on 24-26 October 2018. The Workshop Themes revolve around the topics of personalized learning, teachers' and learners' roles, open education, adaptive teaching, formative assessment and teacher-learner dialogue.

Call for Contributions

EDEN will bring established scholars and researchers of ODL together with early researchers in the field. The workshop will create an open stage for further extending discussions on DE, delegates to engage with experts and actively explore the topics of Personalized Guidance and Support for Learning. Take part and discover the Workshop Themes by submitting your proposals!

Submissions should make a relevant contribution to the field and meet the customary academic requirements: clear aims/questions, methodology, contextualisation, results, conclusions and implications, and references.

Submissions that relate to the Workshop Scope or one or more of the Workshop Themes are invited in the following categories by the deadline: 9 July, 2018. You are encouraged to" style="color: #546fc0; text-decoration: none;">submit your proposal earlier than 9 July to support a speedy evaluation of the proposals and enhance your possibility to register early in time.

Contributions received will be continuously evaluated and authors informed latest by 25 July, 2018.

- Neil Selwyn

Neil Selwyn is a professor in the Faculty of Education, Monash University. His research and teaching focuses on the place of digital media in everyday life, and the sociology of technology (non)use in educational settings.

- Sanna Järvelä

Sanna Järvelä, PhD, is a professor in the field of learning and educational technology and a head of the Learning and Educational Technology Research Unit (LET) in the Department of Educational Sciences, University of Oulu. Her main research interest deal with learning processes in technology-enhanced learning, self-regulated learning and computer supported collaborative learning.

PhD Student Symposium

A PhD Student Symposium will take place on 24 October 2018 as part of the EDEN Research Workshop 2018 conference. The PhD Student Symposium has been designed to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge among doctoral students doing research in the area of the event’s theme, “Personalized Guidance and Support for Learning”, while providing a discussion forum for the advancement of doctoral research. Community Update

EDEN Annual General Meeting 2018
17 June 2018, Genova, Italy

Dear EDEN Member,

The twenty seventh Annual General Meeting of EDEN will be held at 16.00 on Sunday, 17 June 2018 at the venue of the EDEN Annual Conference in Genova, at the Genova University Albergo dei Poveri building (address: Piazzale Emanuele Brignole, 2, 16136 Genova Italy).

All members are invited to attend. According to the EDEN Constitution:

All members of the Institutions Section and Individual members of the NAP Section shall have the right to attend the AGM. Institutions, National and International associations have the right to attend and to speak at the AGM, each of them has one vote. Affiliate, Associate and Individual members, having the right to attend and to speak at the AGM, are not eligible to vote.

At the meeting the following Agenda Items will be discussed:


    • Statement of Financial Activities of EDEN for the year 2017
    • Membership fees for 2019 recommended by the Executive Committee
    • The proposed budget for 2018 recommended by the Executive Committee

The documents in support of the meeting will be sent in due time before the AGM. Re Agenda item 6. – Election of Officers, please note that according to the EDEN Constitution:

Every voting member of the Institution Section has the right to nominate candidates for election to the Executive Committee. The invitation for nominations shall be included with the announcement of the Annual General Meeting. The Executive Committee shall see that there are nominations of at least one candidate for each of the vacant seats. No person other than an Executive Committee member retiring at the meeting shall be eligible for election to the Executive Committee at any general meeting unless not less than 3 or more than 21 days before the date set for the meeting notice in writing has been sent to the Secretariat Office. The notice must be signed by a member qualified to attend and vote at the meeting for which notice is given of the intention to propose such a person for election, and notice must also be given in writing by that person of their willingness to be elected.

The last EDEN NAP webinar was held on 21 May 2018. The topic was “MODERN project – Useful toolkit demonstration to evaluate and use digital tools in educational scenarios”.

MODERN project aimed at helping teachers and trainers incorporate new digital and mobile learning tools into day to day teaching and training delivery. The webinar presented the results of the project that has identified, assessed and categorised the latest and popular digital teaching/training/learning tools.

European Commission's Corner

On-line Survey on the Future of Vocational Education and Training in Europe

An on-line survey has been developed as part of the "Changing Nature and Role of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Europe" project addressing VET experts and stakeholders all over Europe. The findings of the survey will help to validate findings from the first phase of the project as well as to support the development of VET scenarios to be presented during the VET week in Vienna in November 2018. CULT Committee adopts report on Modernisation of Education in the EU

The European Parliament’s CULT Committee adopted its own initiative report on the Modernisation of Education in the EU. This comprehensive report touches on many aspects of education, including early childhood, schools, higher education and teacher training. LLLP and many of its members actively contributed to the report, with the result that the importance of collaboration between formal, non-formal and informal learning is highlighted throughout. The report is scheduled for vote at Plenary on 11 June.


New Call For Proposals for the Deployment Of Skills Assessments

The call for proposals "Support for the deployment of skills assessments in the implementation of “Upskilling Pathways" has been published. The specific objective of this call is to support the deployment of the provision of individual skills assessments for low skilled/ low qualified adults. The deadline for submitting proposals is 13 July 2018. A webinar to present the call in details and reply questions from potential applicants will be held in English on 29 May from 15:00 to 17:00 CEST. Towards Quality and Effective Apprenticeships

The Council Recommendation of 15 March 2018 on a European Framework for Quality and Effective Apprenticeships has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union. The Recommendation aims at increasing the employability and personal development of apprentices and contributing towards a highly skilled and qualified workforce responsive to labour market needs.
