European Commission launches 'Opening up Education' and reveals the programme's new webportal

More than 60% of nine year olds in the EU are in schools which are still not digitally equipped. The European Commission recently unveiled 'Opening up Education', an action plan to tackle this and other digital problems which are hampering schools and universities from delivering high quality education and the digital skills which 90% of jobs will require by 2020. To help kick-off the initiative, the Commission launched a new website, Open Education Europa, which will allow students, practitioners and educational institutions to share free-to-use open educational resources.

2014 EU budget: still a long way to go

On 18 September the Commission unveiled a letter modifying its proposal for the 2014 EU financial framework by heading, taking into account the outcome of MFF negotiations and hoping this document to be “the updated basis for a smooth adoption of the 2014 budget”. €130 million (2011 prices) are foreseen to be frontloaded for Erasmus+ next year (and €20 million in 2015) and almost €1,3bn for the Youth Employment Initiative. On 16 October the Commission, Council and Parliament will meet in trialogue configuration to discuss next year’s figures, still subject to sensitive negotiations.
