NEST - Network of Staff and Teachers in Childcare Services is a European project funded by the European Commission within the Lifelong Learning Programme – under Comenius sub-programme –, with the aim of establishing a network in the field of staff development in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) in Europe. This is the fourth newsletter of the project.

Update on the NEST project's progress

Since our previous newsletter in December 2013 the NEST community held two national events in Hungary and in Spain and is progressing in building an international community. NEST also organized an international workshop at the recently held Annual Conference of the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN) to attract the attention of the educational professionals and policy makers present.

We also built up synergies with similar initiatives and networks through participating in the so called Synergy Strand of the event, where we introduced and seeked collaboration possibilities with experts working on related fields.

On the occasion of the Hungarian event, the focus of the present newsletter is Hungary. Below you will find a report on the Hungarian event, a couple of case studies and good practices.

Successful Hungarian NEST event

According to the evaluation forms, as well, a very successful national conference was held in Hungary on the 22nd of March - even though this was a beautiful spring Saturday the number of participants exceeded 100! Over 90 professionals have registered - policy makers, practitioners and researchers - and the final number of participants was 120 - the interest was exteremely high and every stakeholder was enthusiastic. The conference was held at a wonderful location: the newly renovated aula of Hungary's oldest and largest university's pedagogy building. The event was supported by the Hungarian Pedagogical Socienty.

imageThe title of the conference was: 'COMMUNITY BUILDING DIALOGUE - successful communication between parents and ECEC professionals'. The theme was chosen by the national NEST community as the starting point of the work of the national group last year and now this conference could serve as the conclusion of the work done.

Quite an exciting programme was put together with the collaboration of the members of the Hungarian national group: the presentations were colorful, interesting, of a very high standard and all of them were followed by lively discussions. The section about EU practices (Eszeter Salamon - European Parents) and the NEST community (Éva Szalma, EDEN) was especially popular among the audience. All the participants were showing interest in participating similar events in the future, as well.

500 early childhood teachers highlight the importance of the first years of life

imageNEST partner World Association of Early Childhood Educators (AMEIWAECE) Conference "EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION FOR 0 TO 3 YEAR OLD" that was held this weekend at the Holiday Inn-Madrid has been a great event and a very pleasant opportunity to meet with our members and friends who arrived from all over Spain.

A lot of people visit the NEST Stand and received information about the NEST Project, The Organizers we wish to thank all the speakers for the great efforts they have made to provide new insights and approaches to our work with young children.

No doubt we have all taken something new to use in the classroom on Monday, and new friends. Thank you all!

Kamishibai - paper theater

During the Hungarian conference, participants were able to have a first hand experience with kamishibai or paper theater as part of the presentation of Sarolta Kontra, special education teacher, about teaching children to become readers, the significance of the early years in developing the necessary skills. The Kamishibai is a form of storytelling that originated from Japan, originally used to recite morality stories to illiterate audience.

The Piklerian approach

Emmi Pikler's name is more and more well-known among educators working with young children. All around the world, many parents, according to her principles, provide more freedom to their infants and young children. The Piklerian approach helps them make their life together with the youngest member of the family a peaceful one, and to avoid using – even unintended – force of violence in education. The application of the Piklerian principles is becoming widespread also in day-care centers and nursery homes that raise infants and young children, complementary or substituting for the family. image Emmi Pikler (born 9 January 1902 in Vienna; died 6 June 1984 in Budapest, birth name Emilie Madleine Reich) was a Hungarian pediatrician who introduced new theories of infant education, and put them into practice at an orphanage she ran.

Hot off the press: Key Data on Early Childhood Education and Care in Europe

The Eurydice Key Data on Early Childhood Education and Care in Europe 2014 report aims to provide insights into what constitutes high quality early childhood education and care through policy-driven and internationally comparable indicators. This is the second report on the topic, following a 2009 report that focused on tackling social and cultural inequalities through ECEC.

The Key Data on Early Childhood Education and Care in Europe 2014 report, published jointly with Eurostat, combines statistical data and system level information to describe the structure, organisation and funding of early childhood education and care in Europe. It covers a number of specific issues important to policy-makers such as access to ECEC, governance, quality assurance, affordability, professionalisation of staff, leadership, parent involvement, and measures to support disadvantaged children.

Meet the person behind the username

The NEST Community has a very strong intention to remain in every user's eyes a group of dedicated flesh and blood individuals. In every newsletter, a core community member will introduce themselves and their professional interest as well as their activity within the NEST network. In this newsletter you can meet Bianka Reichardt from Germany.

image"Boys are great, if you understand them. Men, too!" Everything related to that issue is part of my lectures and seminars for parents, kindergarten teachers, child minders and other professionals in the pedagogical field. After my degree in educational science I specialized in the particular needs and modes of behaviour of boys and men and on the consequences they have for women. In 2013 I published a book on that topic.

Taking care and educating children under three years of age is an important task that kindergarten teachers as well as child minders have to cope with. I am first chair women of an association for daycare in the district Verden (Verein für Kindertagespflege Landkreis Verden e.V.). In cooperation with two colleagues, I am responsible for professionalizing daycare for children, which includes professional training, support and counseling for child minders.

In my practice for Systemic Education, Counseling, Communication and Coaching I give advice to individuals, couples and teams that are confronted with difficult situations. My counseling is focused on the process of developing one's own solutions. Thanks to courses for receiving qualifications in Systemic Counseling and therapy and in trauma therapy, I understand that each person is an expert for his or her own concerns, and that this expert knowledge is the key for finding a solution to his or her problem. I teach that knowledge in my seminars with focus on Systemic Principles for Work Routine.
