Learnovation Workshop

Innovation in Learning or Learning for Innovation?
Stafania Aceto, Claudio Dondi, SCIENTER, Italy

Learning is innovating. But what is the potential of learning to support social innovation?
The role of learners as “producers” of learning is increasing and both public as and private actors are increasingly sensitive to the need to involve stakeholders in the process of learning innovation.
The workshop will address this question by analysing how ICT-enabled learning is enhancing innovation in formal, non formal and informal learning contexts.
Participants will be involved in an open discussion on the potential impact of learning innovation on social innovation in a future oriented perspective.
The interactive contribution of participants will constitute key input for the design of scenarios of evolution of “innovative and innovation-leading” learning systems. Recommendations will be elaborated to support decision makers in the implementation of innovation-oriented policies and initiatives.
The workshop will present and discuss the results of the research and networking activities of the “Learnovation” EU project.

The goals of the workshop are:

  • to provide delegates with a knowledge and understanding about key factors in building long-term sustainable partnerships
  • to briefly discuss the role of leadership in the current economic landscape
  • to provide delegates with a knowledge of the strategic role of distance learning in building new partnerships
  • to engage delegates in an interactive discussion about effective partnership strategies they have employed in their collaborative endeavours.

In the 21st century global economy, we must change the way we do business in order to stay competitive; however, education is the key to sustained global competitiveness. Distance learning is essential to handle the overwhelming demands of dynamic and geographically dispersed learners and is necessary in our rapidly changing society. How is distance learning impacting education now?

Utilizing interactive video conferencing as an educational tool for delivering instruction or enriching curriculum not only addresses student retention issues but expands student access to content, increases depth and relevance of learning experiences, provides opportunities for actively engaging students, and accommodates a variety of learning styles. Learn how this technology, when implemented as an instructional strategy in a learner-centered environment, can positively impact teaching and learning in your classroom. Examples, best practices, and content resources will be discussed.

The workshop is divided into three parts where the first part is dedicated to present the project Quality Assurance Network for Adult Learning Centres (QUALC) and the Adult Learning Centres (ALC) as a gateway to integrated learning.

The second part will be an introduction to the QUALC Quality Mark, the related scheme and the criteria areas and levels. The advantage of having a specific quality assurance model (a system and certification), rather than models intended for other contexts, is that it will be designed with the needs of the ALCs and their learners in mind.

The third part is concrete group work with participants representing ALCs self assessment in one or more quality area and reporting in the learners perspective.

Designing for Tomorrow's E-learning, Interactive Examples from a Centre for Excellence
Dawn Leeder, University of Cambridge, Tom Boyle, London Metropolitan University, Richard Windle, University of Nottingham, Alan Leeder, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom

Dcl25@cam.ac.uk

What makes for effective e-learning design? What are the underlying principles? How can expert knowledge be harnessed, expressed, formatted and developed as e-learning? How are the materials evaluated and what do those evaluations tell us about quality and the student learning experience? A team of skilled facilitators from a leading UK Centre for Excellence will take participants on a virtual tour of the processes, tools, templates and principles showing the whole life-cycle. There will be hands-on and brainstorming activities to simulate a mini-workshop. There will also be opportunities to discuss these important issues, so crucial to the quality and effectiveness of e-learning materials.

The workshop will consist of a stimulating mix of short, informative presentations and interactive hands-on sessions allowing participants an overview of the comprehensive processes and techniques developed by a leading Centre for Excellence plus direct experience of the tools and resources currently in use. There will be a brainstorming session and facilitated discussion. All participants will receive a memory stick containing all the resources and templates featured in the workshop and will be invited to join the mailing list to be kept up to date with future developments. A pack of materials will also be provided.

The Role of Higher Education Institutions as Innovators in LLL: System View and Specialised Dialogue

The use of ICT in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) is widely spreading in Europe in spite of the many doubts surrounding the quality of first generation eLearning approaches and applications. EU Universities are moving from a traditional profile to a new one, covering most of the areas of Lifelong Learning (that is sub-systems, we can call them TERRITORIES: they cover from school teachers’ education to adult education and training. These territories are emerging but Universities are maintaining their “traditional” target group: young students). The lack of synergies between these territories is a main constraint towards the design and implementation of quality approaches in HEIs.

The need identified is to promote the sharing and understanding between the different territories covered and the different roles played by HEIs to feed into the LLL policy in general. The proposed workshop wants to present and discuss the research process of the Hextlearn project; the Peer review approach and the perceived quality and Innovation through an interactive session in which all the participants will be motivated to be involved in the discussion taking an active role.

In the economic crisis times, companies should focus on reinforcing their competitive advantage by eliminating skill gaps amongst their employees. Human Resource (HR) managers should take advantage of management and training tools that help them to argue the case for maintaining or even increasing the investment made in employees.

The present Workshop will aim at presenting different methodologies and tools that can close the “learning lifecycle” of the knowledge worker in a competitive business scenario with an integrated technology-based solution that was developed in the PROLIX project. The questions that will be addressed during the Workshop are:

  • How to make best use of learning technologies in severe economic downturns?
  • How to identify which skill gaps among employees should be tackled to achieve maximum benefit for the company/ organisation?
  • How to adapt learning to an individual employee’s needs in order to improve motivation?
  • How to measure the learning outcome in the work place?
  • How to demonstrate the return on investment in training and report this to the management?
