Politehnica University of Timisoara celebrates in 2020 its first century of academic excellence – Politehnica100. Established in November 1920, shortly after Romania’s Unification, by Royal Decree of King Ferdinand I, it is the first higher education institution in West Romania, in Banat region. As Timisoara became a university city, it started growing and its attractiveness for all kinds of investments increased, but still keeping the young and innovative spirit and promoting its image of avant-garde in Romanian and European science.

For 100 years, it has been an outstanding and modern university with a well-deserved reputation for excellence. The excellence is based on the academic programmes, the research and the support given to the students. The employability and employment record of our students are recognized worldwide and the physical environment of the University is highly appreciated.

At present, the Politehnica University of Timisoara has 10 faculties and 4 independent departments with more than 15,000 full-time students and over 130,000 graduates.

The Politehnica University of Timisoara is engaged in research and academic cooperation and exchanges with over 400 universities from other countries, on five continents: Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Asia.

Our research is interdisciplinary – it promotes dialogue and interaction within the region, Europe and the wider global community by addressing technological, social and economic issues.

e-Learning Centre – CeL

The e-Learning Centre (CeL), founded in 1998 organizes and develops distance and online education programs both at the undegraduate and post-graduate levels. Staff at CeL develop and integrate educational environments, digital education, e-learning and mobile learning, develop and manage the UPT Virtual Campus CVUPT, and UniCampus – the first
university-developed MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) in Romania.

The Centre is actively involved in research and development in the areas of eLearning, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), OER (Open Educational Resources), digital students, advanced web technologies for education, online learning, mobile learning, virtual campuses, digital competences and entrepreneurship.

CeL initiated and developed over 25 European, national and international projects in digital education. It runs now the EU projects: DigitalCulture, OpenVM, MODE-IT, ABCtoVLE, IoTProtoLabs.

Academics from CeL are actively involved in several professional organisations and associations (IEEE, EDEN, IADIS, AACE, W3C, IAFES), actively supports the community, the local start-up movement (StartUp Weekend, HackTM, hackathons, CoderDojo) and Girls in Tech, as well as acting in promoting science and technical education.

In the last 5 years runs digital cultural projects in the Timisoara 2021 European Capital of Culture Programme (Spotlight Heritage, Data & Digital Timisoara2021).
