Position, Work experience

Elsebeth Korsgaard Sorensen is Professor in Digital Communication & Learning and head of the AAU research unit, D4Learning (http://d4learning.aau.dk) under the ILD research laboratory at the Dept. of Learning and Philosophy, Aalborg University. She is also Deputy Director of the XLab: Design, Learning, Innovation”. Since 2000 she has been involved in a variety of roles with the successful master programme in ICT and Learning (MIL), offered in equal collaboration between four Danish Universities (Aalborg University, Aarhus University, Copenhagen Business School, the Danish, and Roskilde University): Head of programme, steering committee member, teacher, supervisor.

For many years she has been engaged in national and international research activities within design, delivery and evaluation of technology supported open learning processes using open educational resources (OER). Her research is directed towards several fields: Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), Distance Learning (DE), E-learning (DE). It centers around learning design and pedagogical/instructional issues of using digital technology across virtual and physical teaching and learning contexts. The perspective of her research is formed by communicative and learning theoretical positions and has its main focus on the pedagogical and instructional aspects around the establishment of digital dialogue, reflection and collaboration across digital and physical contexts, as well as on the realisation of Problem-Oriented Project Pedagogy (POPP) across these spaces. In focusing continuously on the enhancement of teaching and learning across virtual and physical contexts, Elsebeth explores questions such as: 1) how to make use the potential of digital and mobile technologies (incl. Web 2.0 and social software) in design of dialogic teaching and learning processes in higher education contexts (she received a Best Paper Award for an outstanding research paper on this issue), 2) how to utilize the power of digital and mobile technologies (incl. Web 2.0 and social software, interactive whiteboards, computer games, mobile phones and video, etc.) in highschool contexts, and 3) how to use the power of digital and mobile technologies as reflective tools in the pursued of the ongoing global process of advancing learner empowerment and digital democratic citizenship.

Currently, Elsebeth’s research is focusing intensively on the challenge of inclusion in schools. As head of the project, iDIDAKT, funded by the Danish Ministry of Education, she investigates the potential and use of digital technology for enhancing the process of inclusion in schools of kids with difficulties in focusing attention, incl. difficulties related to developmental issues. In general, her research raises questions, such as e.g. how to utilize the potential and power of digital and mobile technologies to promote creativity in learning in higher education contexts and in schools. She research optic incudes a strong focus on promoting dialogue and reflection in creative learning designs that utilize the power of digital and mobile technologies to address and advance learner empowerment and digital democratic citizenship. In 2015 she received a Double Award for Best Research Paper and Best Practice Paper (elected by two independent juries) on a paper addressing the challenge of inclusion of kids with developmental difficulties and difficulties in focusing attention.

While spending a research semester (fall 2010) in Cambridge collaborating with scholars at Cambridge University and at the Open University on creativity and open educational resources (OER), she was elected Fellow at St. Edmunds College, Cambridge, October 2010. In 2012 she received an award from the University of Iceland for enhancing international collaborations in research and education between Iceland and Denmark.

Elsebeth has been involved in a long list of research project. She presents her research at international conferences, frequently as keynote speaker, and she has published extensively in international journals and books within the field. In 2016 she was elected Fellow of EDEN (European Distance, Open and E-Learning Network). She serves on the editorial board of several international journals and on program committees of several international conferences. Voldborg, H., Sorensen, E. K., De Lopez, K. M. J. & Jensen, R. H. S. 2016 Aalborg University Press. 194 p.

Publication: Research  Report

The research project, ididakt, runs from 2013-2016. iDIDAKT is financed by the Ministry of Education (Ministeriet for Børn og Undervisning, MBU) with funding allocated earmarked 2012 for investigating it-based modes of learning, appropriate pedagogy, and digital tools directed towards helping the inclusion into mainstream schools of kids and youngsters with developmental difficulties and/or difficulties in focusing attention.

The project is situated in the research unit, D4Learning, Dept. of Learning and Philosophy, Aalborg University, in a consortium construction with three participating municipalities: Favrskov, Horsens and Herning.

The overall goal of this funding was to support concrete projects in schools, which aim at identifying new digital forms of learning and pedagogies, and use of it-based tools to strengthen inclusion and teaching differentiation.

ididakt investigates, develops and tests digital OERs, which may contribute to increased professional and social inclusion into mainstream schools of kids/youngsters with developmental difficulties and/or difficulties in focusing attention.

This wrap-up report provides an overview of the investigations conducted in ididakt and of the final results. It describes the research design of the project, the research methods, the collection of data and the results of the research project. The report documents and includes, in particular, the qualifying approach of the project, as it unfolds in an authentic school and teaching context with standard classes, standard teachers, and standard access to digital technologies.

·       Exploratory travel between Denmark and China, India, Israel, Japan, USA and Brazil and vice versa, in order to identify potential for new collaborative projects and partnerships.

The global network on creativity in education (iCreaNet) adapts a case study approach and has now been initiated (January 1, 2011) by Aarhus University. It involves 10 senior researchers from Denmark, USA, England, Japan, Israel and Brazil. The initiative has been taken by Associate Professor Elsebeth Korsgaard Sorensen and e-learning consultant Asger Harlung.

Creativity and OER

Research Project, Cambridge, Fall 2010

Many years of research and development clearly demonstrate that innovative digital learning environments across physical and digital spaces are products of complex interconnections between pedagogical, organisational and technological issues. Any changes in guidelines associated with one of these issues will inevitably influence and instigate change in the others. First, it concerns an understanding of how humans interact and collaborate while learning through OER technologies ranging from web-based applications to Web 2.0 and social networks.

Second, it concerns pedagogical designs and how central principles of learning, interhuman development and OER must be integrated into innovative learning environments across physical and digital space. Third, it presupposes an understanding of organisational and infrastructural issues and how social, intercultural organisations and their inherent OER infrastructures inhibit or afford the adoption of shared knowledge construction and sharing.
