On the threshold of the 11th EDEN Research Workshop EDEN thanks the vast number of submissions received. EDEN’s traditional bi-annual Research Workshop in 2020 celebrates its twentieth anniversary on 21-23 October. Despite of the COVID-situation, the event (this year online) has attracted a high number of valuable submissions and impressive registrations. The EDEN PhD Symposium on 21 October, fifth in a row, this year has attracted the highest ever number of young scholars. Naturally, we willl miss the pleasure of your company face-to-face as the event this year will be organised online. Our host, the Universidade Aberta Lisbon, however, will offer a nice social experience by the “Sounds of the University: Exploring Coimbra’s Fado tradition” which is an exceptional Fado – very much an academic one. Historically, only male students or lecturers from the University of Coimbra used to play it. The song has a particular melody and song structure and has always been connceted with the University’s bohemian life. The Coimbra Fado is an UNESCO Intangible Human Heritage.Besides the 90+ presentations, the high prestige keynote speakers, an Oxford-style Debate on COVID-19 and Higher education, a Round table on Open scholarships and the Conference report on the “Research in ODL State of the Art” will enhance the conference experience.

Programme and Oxford-style debate
One of the highlights of the Research Workshop will be the Oxford-style debate on the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on research in open, distance and online learning in a networked society.
The debate is a format based on a predetermined statement – also called a “motion” – from two opposing perspectives.

EDEN 2020 PhD Symposium
The EDEN 2020 PhD Symposium Lisbon will be organised on 21 October. The Symposium, held in previous years in Barcelona, Bruges, Dublin and online has been designed to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge among doctoral students doing research in the area of technology-enhanced online, digital, open and distance learning, providing a valuable forum for the advancement of doctoral research. The Symposium is led by a panel of international experts. The programme is available here.
EDEN NAP Workshop
The NAP Steering Committee is delighted to invite you to the workshop we are hosting during RW 2020, 21 October 2020, 11:00 CEST. The workshop proposes to describe what the Network of Academics and Professionals is, who its Steering Committee members are and what drives them in their dedication to EDEN and EDEN NAP.
We kindly invite you to fill in a short survey on NAP before the workshop.
Furthermore, the participants will be engaged in a conversation on how much they know about and expect from the Network of Academics and Professionals.
Accepted presentations will be published in the Conference Proceedings. Registered delegates will have electronic access to the full version of contributions. Publications will be openly accessible after the Workshop. Selected authors will be invited to submit to a special issue of EURODL. The best poster submissions will be published as short papers in RE@D, a journal edited by LE@D and Universidade Aberta. Awarded and accepted papers can be submitted to the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education, a Web of Science (SSCI) and Scopus indexed journal edited by UOC, Universidad de Los Andes (Colòmbia), Dublin City University (Ireland) and Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania), and published by SpringerOpen.
