1. EDEN 2007 Annual Conference - Naples, 13-16 June 2007

NEW LEARNING 2.0?

Less than five weeks left until the top event of the year!

Registration for the conference is well in progress. By the early bird deadline, near 400 bookings arrived. You can consult the programme of plenary sessions, the list of keynote speakers and the theme of their speeches on the conference web.

The list of papers accepted for presentation is also available, the detailed conference programme will be displayed on the web in one week.

A special session will be held about the state of the art of e-learning developments in China, featuring the President of the China Central Radio and TV University (CCRTVU), serving over 2 million students via traditional and electronic media.

4. Please, be kindly reminded that the online survey about EDEN, developed to collect members' opinion, is open until 30 May. We would greatly appreciate your feedback on the activities and services provided and on how you think we could improve the ways of serving the EDEN community.

5. real LEARNING in VIRTUAL worlds - EDEN Sixth Open Classroom Conference

EDEN will organise its sixth Open Classroom Conference in Stockholm, 24-26 October 2007. The event, focusing on school-level distance and e-Learning, aims at offering an opportunity to present, be informed about and join the European dialogue about how families, teachers, experts, authorities and societies at large are experiencing and handling the changes that are leading towards Real Learning in Virtual Worlds.

The conference is organised in collaboration with EENet - European Experts' Network for Education and Technology, the Stockholm Institute of Education (host of the event) and the Swedish Agency for Flexible Learning. Further details and the Call for papers will soon be available on the EDEN website.

6. Meeting at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris

UNESCO Deputy Director General, Georges Haddad met on 19 April EDEN President Ingeborg Boe, Martine Vidal, Executive Committee member and Andras Szucs Secretary General in Paris.

The main issue on the agenda was the preparation of the next EDEN Research Workshop in October 2008, that will be organised in collaboration with UNESCO, in the theme of right to education, on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The provisional title of the workshop is "Learning in open and accessible technology-enhanced environments - Do web-technologies act as enablers or barriers to achieving the universal right to education? "

7. Developing contacts with USDLA

We have earlier announced that EDEN and USDLA - United States Distance Learning Association established a special collaboration, being EDEN the European partner in the USDLA Global Affiliate Chapter. It is our pleasure now to report that Dr. Andras Szucs, Secretary General of EDEN was invited to join USDLA 2007/2008 Advisory Board.

At the EDEN Annual Conference, in Naples, USDLA representatives will highlight how the new media applications can be aligned for specific types of learning objectives, including the selection of specific media, applications, and the assessment of learning outcomes. It will also overview various international case studies of different media applications in education and training. Speakers will be Carol Daunt, Founder and Managing Director of LearnTel Pty Ltd., and Russ Colbert, Global Education Market Director, Polycom, both active members of USDLA.

8. The 12th Cambridge International Conference on Open and Distance Learning

The twelfth Cambridge International Conference will take place from 25 - 28 September 2007 at the Centre for Educational Research and Development, St Edmund's College, Cambridge, with the theme "What do we know about using new technologies for learning and teaching? A ten year perspective."

Keynote speakers are Professor Terry Anderson, Athabasca University, Professor Asha Kanwar, the Commonwealth of Learning, Professor Diana Laurillard, University of London, and Professor Bob Moon, The Open University, UK. Papers are now being accepted until 1 June.

9. The Taking Learning Mobile conference (Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dublin, Ireland on 7 September 2007) will discuss the resources, technologies and challenges facing the incorporation of mobile learning into mainstream education and training. The conference is the closing event of "Mobile Learning - Incorporating mobile learning into mainstream education and training" project. Addresses will include topics such as personalised learning, SMS services in distance education, the use of podcasting technology in learning processes as well as case studies on how mobile learning is being implemented in real higher education learning situations. 10. EDEN Member, University of Technology Lifelong Learning Institute Dipoli, in collaboration with European Professional Federations and Associations and Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences is organising the 5th European Forum entitled "State-of-the-Art - Continuing engineering Education and Continuing Professional Development - Challenging the Future" between 6-10 November 2007.

The Forum will examine questions such as how the continuing engineering education can effectively response to the challenges of knowledge economy and to the changes in working life to support lifespan professional development.
