1. Network of Academics and Professionals - Steering Committee election

Following the Call, until the deadline 18 January 2008, the following nominations were received at the EDEN Secretariat:

2. Membership survey 2007 - Results available

In 2007, a survey was carried out, in order to ask the members’ opinion about the achievements as well as on preferences for future developments. The first part of the Membership Survey assessed the satisfaction of members related to quality and importance of EDEN activities and services. The second part of the survey was gathering information on how they think, the Executive Committee and the Secretariat could improve the ways of serving the EDEN community.

3. We are delighted to announce that EDEN and The Observatory of Borderless Higher Education (OBHE) agreed to establish special co-operation relations, in frames of which they will:

On basis of the co-operation agreement, OBHE will be granted special associate membership status in EDEN and, reciprocally, EDEN will be listed and treated by OBHE under its "National and Regional Interuniversity Bodies" section.

EDEN is looking forward to a continued, successful collaboration with OBHE!

4. 2008 Annual Conference - 5 days until the submission deadline, 1 February

The EDEN Annual Conference in 2008 in Lisbon will address the significance and impact of cultural issues in distance and e-learning development in Europe and beyond.

We invite European academic and professional practitioners and in particular the EDEN community to contribute and share experience in Lisbon, where the magnificent Belém Cultural Centre, on the Tagus river side next to the Tower of Belém and the Historical Jeronimos Monastery will serve as conference venue.

5. What does it mean to be a global university?

Six position papers, written by leaders in higher education who have been closely involved with global higher education initiatives and were part of an international forum, focusing primarily on the above questions, held in London last November, have been received from the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education (OBHE), with very insightful observations and commentaries on the topic.

We are pleased to announce the availability of the papers at the NAP Members' area .

6. European Certificate in E-learning Course Design and Teaching

EDEN member Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) launches its European Certificate for Course Design and Teaching in E-learning in March 2008. UOC invites the EDEN community to join the programme, which is offered also in collaboration with Institute of Education, University of London and the University of Florence, Italy.

The course is developed based on the accredited Master’s Degree in E-learning, offered in Spanish by UOC and is striving to be a European Master’s Degree thanks to the joint initiative of the partners in the very next future. By receiving the Certificate offered by the collaborating institutions, the students will have a recognition of the ECTS involved when enrolling to the future joined European Master’s Degree. The Certificate leads students to develop their skills and competences to be able of design, implement and coordinate educational processes in which use of ICT and, particularly, virtual teaching and learning environments is a key issue in the achievement of quality education improvement.

7. Barcelona Research Workshop discussion - Theory of distance learning and education

Edited version of the Fourth Research Workshop discussion of Otto Peters - Borje Holmberg - Michael G. Moore as published in "Distances et savoirs" is available at the Keynote speakers page of the conference.

8. Ch@is Conference on Instructional Technologies Research

EDEN Member Open University of Israel, Chais Research Center for the Integration of Technology in education will hold its 3rd annual research conference on 6th of February, 2008.

The organisers invite EDEN members to visit the Call for Research Collaboration and take active part in the event.

9. Horizon Report 2007

EDEN Member, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) has joined the New Media Consortium and as a first step of co-operation, the renowned Horizon Report 2007 has been translated into Spanish. This annual report, produced by the NMC and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, analyses the impact of new technologies in the field of higher education and is produced under Creative Commons licence that allowed thousands of downloadings of the English editions. Highlights of this fourth edition include user-created contents, social networks, new uses of mobile telephones or virtual worlds, as well as the emerging forms of publication or massively multiplayer educational games.

The Spanish version and future editions will give the opportunity to widen the impact in Spanish speaking communities.
