We hope to continue the fruitful collaboration for your satisfaction. Any proposal about how to improve our services and communication with members is appreciated.

1. EDEN Fifth Research Workshop, Paris - 20-22 October 2008

In the jubilee year of the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights, the event puts special emphasis on the "rights" and "access" to education, by exploring how recent developments of open and distance education enhanced by ICT turn into a key actor when and where access to education is concerned and what are the main quests for institutions, studens and the information and communication technology.

The theme of this Workshop has been approached by six scientific journals - Asian Journal of Distance Education, Open Praxis, Distances et savoirs, EURODL - European Journal of Open Distance and E-Learning, JALN - Journal of Asynchronous Learning Network, IRRODL - International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning - who launched a common call for papers on "access to education and distance education" in 2007. The complete theme with research questions, and the selected articles can be accessed here. There will be a special focus on these during the Research Workshop.

During plenary sessions the following key speakers will address the main theme of the event:

Delegates will be able to listen presentations selected from among the 115 submissions in parallel sessions. There will be a special session organised for young researchers and another to present students' perspectives.

The online registration is open. There is a reduced fee for authors with accepted presentation and also for EDEN members.

4. EDEN Lisbon Conference Proceedings on the web

We are pleased to announce that the proceedings of the 2008 Annual Conference, held in Lisbon, Portugal "New Learning Cultures - How do We Learn? Where do We Learn" are now accessible in electronic format for members of EDEN. If you would like to receive information about how to access the papers, please send a message from your email address as it is registered on the eden-members mailing list, with the subject: 'Proceedings download request' to the EDEN Secretariat.

5. New posts on the President's blog

Though we trust, you are regular reader of the President's blog, let us draw your attention to few posts that had been uploaded during the summer vacation period.

Alan Tait, President of EDEN posted his impressions and foresights after the Lisbon Annual Conference, whilst Morten F. Paulsen EDEN Executive Committee member wrote posts about "Transparency in Co-operative Online Education" and "Embedding rich media in online articles".

6. Former EDEN President, Valerio Grementieri passed away

We inform the community with deep regrets that Professor Valerio Grementieri, President of EDEN in 1997-2000, died on 5 August 2008. Valerio has led the Association in an important period of its development. His great experience and spirit has supported EDEN and provided leadership for the European policy development in open, distance and e-learning. We shall keep his memory alive in the international community.

6. Public EU consultation on ICT and Innovation

In search of the best strategies to boost Europe's leadership in ICT (Information and Communications Technology) research and innovation in the next decade, the European Commission launched a public consultation.

Contributions from industry, ICT experts, policy-makers and the wider public will be fed into a new strategy for ICT research and innovation, to be unveiled next year. The aim is to put European ICT industry, especially SMEs, to the fore of the race for global competitiveness. The public consultation is open until 7 November 2008.

7.The Educational Repositories workshop and survey

The EdReNe project is now collecting data in order to create a profile of the current status of educational repositories in Europe. If you are a repository owner/manager, you are invited to provide answers to a survey attempting to profile your repository. The data collected will be used for producing a "State of the Art report", to be published on the project website and will also provide input for discussions in upcoming workshops.

The first use of the collected data will be during the workshop "Educational Repository Strategies, general level", 16-17 September 2008, in Tallinn, Estonia. This survey focuses on an individual repository. If you have information on more than a single repository that you would like to fill in, or know of others who might be willing to contribute with a repository profile, you can do this by following this link.

8. REVIVE project accepted for funding

A new EU project with involvement of EDEN has been accepted for funding in August. REVIVE - Reviewing and Reviving Existing VET Curriculum "seeks to contribute to European co-operation in Quality Assurance focusing on defining QA factors in Vocational Education and Training services, by reviewing and reviving extisting VET Curriculum on the basis of innovative pedagogical and technological methodology."

9. Make use of the EAGLE Toolkit - Practical perspectives of intergenerational learning

Out now: EAGLE Toolkit for Intergenerational Activities is a framework for practitioners, policy makers and educators to develop and/or implement intergenerational programmes based on a conceptual framework that has a foundation in analysed good practice.

The Toolkit is supported by a resource bank of analysed intergenerational case studies drawn from six European countries. These studies can be accessed through the EAGLE Practice Showcase.

Please help to further improve, refine and enhance the EAGLE Toolkit for Intergenerational Activities by answering our short Online Survey on the overall coherence and suitability of the Toolkit!

10. News from EDEN member organisations and partners

EDEN institutional member International Training Centre of ILO is orginising the blended learning activity "Facilitate face-to-face learning", from the Competency-Based Human Resources Development Programme. This blended activity targets occasional and professional trainers and consist of 3 phases:

The SINCERE project, Specific Support Action funded by the European Commission in the frame of FP6 Priority 7 aiming at Supporting International Networking and Cooperation in Educational Research invites you to participate to an on-line survey on a roadmap for educational research in an international perspective.

The Second European Conference for Sustainable Water Management and E-Learning will take place in Budapest, 25-26 September 2008, organised by the European consortium Knowledge Bridge. The focus will be on the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) for a better and sustainable water management throughout whole Europe!

11. Call for Manuscripts from the Canadian Journal of Distance Education

The Journal of Distance Education is devoting a Special Issue to exploring the increased use and maturity of project amangement practice in support of e-learning projects, with special emphasis on the role of end-users engagement (both instructors and students) in managing e-learning projects.

Deadline for proposal submissions is 15 November 2008. Submissions of full papers is 28 Feburary 2009 Expected publication date is Fall 2009.
