EDEN hopes to continue the good collaboration for members' satisfaction. Your proposal about how to improve our services and communication with members is welcome!

1. EDEN Seventh Open Classroom Conference, Porto - 15-17 October 2009

The european school 2.0

Openness and flexibility will characterise both the content and format of the Porto Open Classroom Conference: inspiring keynote presentations will be followed by moderated discussions, presentation of innovative tools and methods will be intertwined with hands-on exploration of their potentials by participants.

The online registration is open. There is a reduced fee for EDEN members, further for primary, secondary and vocational school teachers. To see details of the procedure, the fees and how to join the event, please consult the conference page.

Porto, or Oporto is the second largest city in Portugal, considered as the economic and cultural heart of the entire region. The city is internationally famous of the Port wine, produced in and shipped from here. Its historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. It is internationally

The Conference will be hosted at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Center, in downtown Porto, by the Douro River. This historical building was the former customs house which after recovering by Portuguese contemporary architects is now an outstanding facility including a modern conference center and a transport and communications museum.

4. EDEN Gdansk Conference Proceedings on the web

The proceedings of the 2009 Annual Conference, held in Gdansk, Poland "Innovation in Learning Communities — What did you invent for tomorrow?" are now accessible in electronic format for members of EDEN. If you would like to receive information about how to access the papers, please send a message from your email address as it is registered on the eden-members mailing list, with the subject: 'Proceedings download request' to the EDEN Secretariat.

5. New posts on the President's blog

Though we trust, you are regular reader of the President's blog, let us draw your attention to few posts that had been uploaded during the summer vacation period.

Alan Tait, President of EDEN posted his impressions after the Gdansk Annual Conference, and shares his views about sustainability in education.

6. NKI celebrating its 50th anniversary

We are pleased to share with members that NKI Distance Education, one of the foremost distance education institutions in Norway, the largest one in Northern Europe celebrates the 50th anniversary of its foundation this year.

EDEN is proud to have NKI, the first institution all over the world to offer online education, among its members. We congratulate to all professionals at the institution, wish them future successes and continued nice collaboration.

7. New European projects with EDEN involvement

Great news: the latest Lifelong Learning Call resulted five interesting projects' start in the coming autumn. The projects entitled SEVAQ+, Te @ch.us, EquNet, FREE and LINKS-UP are all promoted by prestigeous partnerships with the objective of further developing the European knowledge society.

8. News from EuroPace

Two best-practice manuals on blended mobility and on e-coaching were published under the title "Home & Away. Coaching exchange students from a distance" The summary booklet and recommendations can be downloaded from here.

The UNIQUe project that worked towards a quality label in e-learning was successfully completed and the first universities and institutes were awarded. The UNIQUe Quality Label for the innovative and creative use of ICT in higher education was officially launched in June 2009. Institutions that are interested in the label can take a look at the project website

Large-scale wiki on Virtual Campuses was launched and opened for the public in June 2009 in the framework of the Re.ViCa project. The wiki is probably one of the largest repositories on the topic of Virtual Campus available today.

To become a member of the international group of experts and to contribute to the wiki please, visit this site. The Re.ViCa project will conclude in September 2009 with the publication of a Virtual Campus Handbook including guidelines, best practices and recommendations.

A most interesting interview titled: "Going Global: Trends in Cross-Border Higher Education for ODL" with Don Olcott Jr., Chief Executive of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, about global open and distance learning related to cross-border higher education can be read here.

10.The Educational Repositories seminar and expert workshop

The proceedings of EdReNe project 3rd strategic seminar are available at the project website.

The 3rd expert workshop on Educational Repository Strategies will be held on 17-18 Setpember in Sestri Levante, Italy. To discuss participation conditions (including registration and emerging costs), please contact Eva Suba.

11. Next HEAXTLEARN workshop: Innovating Higher Education through Creation of ICT Communities

The next HEXTLEARN workshop takes place as part of the Open Project Laboratory of the EFQUEL Innovation Forum 2009. This workshop will guide in the future of university education, allowing the insight into the HEXTLEARN territories, the sub-systems of learning that focus on the diversity of the different target groups of nowadays' universities.

EFQUEL Innovation Forum 2009
