European Year 2012 on Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations

The website of the European Year 2012 was launched during the high level conference "Towards the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations (2012)".

The theme of the European Year will be reflected in the EDEN 2012 Annual Conference theme in Oporto: "Open Learning Generations - Passing over the Gap from Generation "Y" to the Mature Lifelong Learners"

New European Commission website delivers more clarity on qualifications

The European Commission has launched a website that will give experts a better insight into how qualifications in different countries compare with each other. The European Qualifications Framework (EQF) portal is part of an EU initiative to make national qualifications more transparent across Europe, promoting workers' and learners' mobility between countries and encouraging lifelong learning.

The European Qualifications Framework is currently being rolled out across Europe as countries relate their national qualifications systems to the eight-level European framework. Currently in English, the portal will gradually be made available in 27 languages by next year.

Public consultations: which way forward for EU education and youth programmes?

The European Commission has just published the results of public consultations on the future generation of EU programmes for education and youth from 2014.

The results of these consultations will feed into the Commission's preparations for the next generation of education and youth programmes. The Commission will propose an outline of the post-2013 budget at the end of June and present a proposal for new education and youth programmes in the autumn 2011.

9. Highlights from EDEN Members and Partners

Ellinogermaniki Agogi, Greece

The opening of the 50 years anniversary celebration of EA was realized on 16 June 2011 at Pallini. About 5500 people (students, parents and friends of the school) participated to the event that started with the talk of the Minister of Education Anna Diamantopoulou.

A video clip was prepared for the 50 years celebration: The Future is Here! I am the Future!

EA R&D team also celebrates the approval of the 100th Educational Project since the establishment of the department in 1998. The project is called ODYSSEUS, which aims at the organization of a Pan-European students' contest for the design of future missions to Mars (supported by EPS and ESA).

The next milestone in this celebration year is the hosting of the EDEN Open Classroom Conference in October 2011, titled "Never Waste a Crisis! - Inclusive Excellence, Innovative Technologies and Transformed Schools as Autonomous Learning Organisations".

EA would like to thank you for those collaborated and supported them during all these years.

2011 ICDE Standing Conference of Presidents

University Presidents take criticism for the lack of acceptance for open and distance learning at the 2011 ICDE Standing Conference of Presidents, New York, USA.

  • Internal resistance from faculty to embrace technology has yet to be overcome, though criticism should rest with universities. They too frequently fail to seek dialogue with staff and instead attempt to impose the will of the administration
  • The university community also struggles to cope with political realities. Politicians demand an instant return on investment within the period of their political term. Executives are advised to make arguments about social and economic benefits, competitiveness and the political stability that can be derived through greater development of education.
  • Tension between pedagogy and technology in the learning environment was a further key theme Public institutions are falling behind private institutions where the use of innovative technology is written into faculty employment contracts. In developing economies mobile solutions and cheap technology is the only means to widening access.
