News from the EDEN Council of Fellows

Greetings to the EDEN Community!

Indeed, keeping our EDEN members informed of developments within EDEN is a key objective of the association. As Chair of the Council of Fellows Board, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on our progress on current initiatives within the EDEN Council of Fellows.

As was announced last summer at the EDEN Annual Conference in Genoa, the community of EDEN Fellows and Senior Fellows has been rebranded as the EDEN Council of Fellows. This development stemmed from a growing need within the EDEN organization to leverage the wisdom and expertise of its Fellows and by doing so, advance collaboration, communication and awareness raising on the most strategic developments in the area of online and distance learning (ODL). Through this initiative, EDEN hopes to take advantage of its growing network of expert professionals and practitioners by engaging them in addressing many of the challenges confronting ODL and the EDEN organization today.

As a bit of background: The Council is comprised of nearly 100 EDEN Fellows and Senior Fellows, advisors, experts and professionals, who discuss emerging strategic issues in the area of open. distance and e-learning, for the purpose of fostering innovation development, suggesting strategies for realizing these innovations within EDEN member organizations (think tank), consulting with the EDEN EC and NAP, and serving as advocates for EDEN in professional, academic, but also political contexts.

Since establishment of the Council last summer, there have been two meetings – one at the EDEN annual conference in Genoa and one at the EDEN Research Workshop in Barcelona– which were meant to further refine initiatives to be addressed by the Council. From the Council meetings also emerged a variety of key initiatives, including

  • Research into EURODL as indexed journal
  • Current and future open education trends within socio-political contexts
  • Roles, responsibilities, and values of members of the EDEN Community
  • Strategic development of EDEN (2030)

At their meeting in Barcelona, the Council also established a Board of The Council, which has the purpose of leading, organizing, and positioning Council initiatives. The Council confirmed appointment of the following members to the Board :

  • Lisa Marie Blaschke (Chair)
  • Don Olcott, Jr. (Vice-Chair)
  • Deborah Arnold
  • Wim van Petegem
  • Albert Sangra
  • Christian Schumann
  • Torhild Slaato
  • Antonio Teixeira

The EDEN Council of Fellows will be meeting again at the EDEN Annual Conference in Bruges, where the Board will present the status of the ongoing initiatives and to discuss next steps. With the establishment of the Council and its Board, we hope to further capture as well as create synergies across the EDEN organization and community, while also position the Council of Fellows to serve in an advisory role for realizing these synergies.

In order to keep you informed of the ongoing developments of the EDEN Council of Fellows, we will be providing updates on the EDEN website. News from the EDEN Fellows will include information such as critical reviews of developments in the ODL field, reports from various EDEN conferences and events (such as the annual EDEN Conference in Bruges next month), updates on Council projects, and other relevant information.

We look forward to seeing you in Bruges this June!

Kind regards,

Lisa Marie Blaschke

EDEN NAP webinar: Possible use of a portfolio as European Development

“Possible use of a portfolio as European Development” webinar took place on Wednesday, 5 June 2019 at 15:30 CEST with Alfredo Soeiro, Deputy Chair of the NAP Steering Committee, from the University of Porto, Portugal in EDEN’s dedicated Adobe Connect room.

Watch the recording

E-portfolios can be understood as a digital dynamic tool that enables individuals to document, display and manage their skills, qualifications and experience throughout the lifespan of their career. e-portfolios help individuals be reflective, support their personal development, allow them to showcase their skills, qualifications and experience, and enable (self-) assessment of their skills. The new Europass framework adopted the approach of web-based tools to support individuals in documenting and describing their competences and qualifications acquired through learning and non-formal and informal learning. The Europass e-portfolio may build on the current Europass Online. Users may use the Europass e-portfolio to document and describe their personal information and to manage careers and lifelong learning. The use of this tool should be discussed and analyzed, therefore participate and debate.

MicroHE project survey available

As part of the MicroHE project, the survey on the micro-credentials in Europe was finalised during the 5th consortium meeting in Budapest, Hungary on 14 May 2019.

If you are interested in the topic, we would be very thankful to learn your expert opinion on the state-of-art and the future of micro-credentials in higher education. You can express your views by just filling out the survey by 20 June 2019. Completing the questionnaire would only take 20 minutes.

The ”MicroHE” project is aiming at “providing the most comprehensive policy analysis yet conducted of the impact of modularisation, unbundling and micro-credentialing in European Higher Education address the challenges described above by:

  • gathering the state of the art in micro-credentialing in European Higher Education today, by organizing the first European survey on micro-credentials in HE, surveying institutions across the continent, with the aim of understanding the current level of provision, the types of micro-credentials offered and future trends in provision of micro-credentials
  • forecasting the impacts of continued modularisation of Higher Education on HE Institutions
  • examining the adequacy of European recognition instruments for micro-credentials, in particular ECTS, the diploma supplement and qualification frameworks
  • proposinga ‘credit supplement’ to give detailed information about micro-credentials in a way compatible with ECTS, the diploma supplement and qualification frameworks
  • proposing a meta-data standard and developing an online clearinghouseto facilitate recognition, transfer and portability of micro-credentials in Europe.

OEPass project’s Learning Passport draft finalised

As part of the OEPass project, the draft version of the Learning Passport was finalised during the 5th consortium meeting in Budapest, Hungary on 15 May 2019.

The Learning Passport is ready to start the piloting phase. Anybody is welcome to experiment with the Learning Passport and determine its usefulness by filling in the form. The OEPass partnership also welcomes feedback on how well the Learning Passport facilitates the recognition and transferability of non-traditional learning experiences.

The OEPass project intends to address the issues of

  • the missing guidance on how to document virtual mobility / open education experiences for the purposes of credit transfer;
  • the missing procedures for recognition of prior learning or of non-formal/informal learning scalable to the massive numbers of students enrolling in open education programmes such as MOOCs;
  • the non-existing European approach to recognising, transferring or scaling open education modules.

by creating a standard format for describing open education and virtual mobility experiences in terms of ECTS which:

  • addresses common criticisms (lack of trust) of open education, in particular with respect to student assessment and identity;
  • is scalable to hundreds or thousands of students through automatic issuing and verification of certificates;
  • Can capture a wide range of non-formal and formal open education experiences.

For more information on the OEPass project, please, visit its website.

50th anniversary of the OUUK

Please, do continue, bringing many happy returns of the day

The Open

So many meanings and so many interpretations… through 50 years of collaborative development!

From freely available, to accessible and inclusive… and global.

Always inviting: to consider, to participate, to join and collaborate…

Free from restrictions, but thoughtful with quality standards.

Responsive and responsible.

Reflective and always in the progressive state…

It took 50 years for “traditional” higher education to understand what you are, why you are and where you are heading for.

The Open University in the UK

EDEN is a little bit more than half of your age, as one of your children – mostly attached to you until nowadays and inheriting the values and traditions, thoughtful and careful legacy (established by Sir John Daniel), wisdom and nature of the innovation in technology enhanced learning – through the roots of the Open, established in Milton Keynes, in 1991, with the goodwill and support from the founders and fathers of EDEN.

EDEN for Digital Learning and Teaching in Europe

Our life tempo is amazingly fast. Reflection on developments and achievements is a rare appreciated possibility these days. When stepping into the position of President in 2016, I called for community collaboration and active contribution to ensure the representation of community needs and wishes. The talk came into action very soon with the exponential growth of events and collaborative links that can hardly be summarised on a regular basis in such blog posts…

The EDEN community is a very special one, acting and living without borders, neither geographical nor political ones, working out how to foster the change and improvement of teaching and learning in the digital age, how to scale transformation up into digital education practices established for the good of digital and networked society.

EDEN life circle spins very fast, almost all of it dedicated for creating, reflecting on and discussing the experiences of digital learning and teaching in Europe. The discussion takes place through EDEN chats, webinars, virtual and physical events and personal meetings. Discussion results are brought to the EDEN NAP and the Council of EDEN Fellows and strategic links between needs and EDEN actions are made with the decisions at EDEN Executive Committee meetings.
